Newfoundland

In July 2010 my family and I were over visiting in Newfoundland.  While we were vacationing we noticed a few houses for sale on MLS that we were really wanting to see and possibly purchase.  We went to see one in Harbour Grace the town that owns a piece of my heart.  We had looked there in previous years, but never found anything. This was a historic property that was all set up for a bed and breakfast.  We thought perfect!!  We have a bunch of people that live with us in Hamilton and thought it would be a lot of space for everyone to move.  When we finally got into the house what a HUGE disappointment!  There was so much water damage and we would have to invest loads of money into this house with a price tag that was already scary for our little income.  Sadly we left this house and started home with heavy hearts.  On the way home you have to drive through a town called Heart's Content.  We went up the road and my mother in law pointed out a house that was just one the market.  It was a white house with red trim right on the ocean.  It was wonderful to say the least.
As we were outside the house poking around a young man walked by and we asked him how much they were asking.  He said something like 90,000.  Our jaws DROPPED.  He laughed as he thought it was too much for the little abandoned house.  Regardless, we were optimistic and saw this as a gift from God right away.  We went back to Heart's Delight and called the name on the sign right away.  We were scheduled to leave the next morning, but the agent made time to come and show us the house that night.  Once inside we saw there was some water damage, but it was cosmetic damage.  The structure was mint!  As we walked through this giant house standing soundly on the ocean we got more and more excited.  We told the agent we would look at making an offer as soon as we returned.  We don't think he thought we were real, but gave us papers to leave with anyways.
As soon as we got back to Ontario we made appointments to consolidate loans and get this mortgage approved.  It took some time, but it was in God's will and we got the house September 2010!!  The five bedroom, 2200sq foot house right on the ocean in the beautiful town of Heart's Content was ours.  Blessed for sure.
My husband took a weekend trip back down to Newfoundland to clean out the things that were left and tear out some of the Beaver board that was wet to rid of the smell that was lingering in the house.  While he was there he found loads of papers up in the antique, photos and diplomas.  So many things that the family that was a big part of Heart's Content left behind.  We had sunday school papers, pay stubs, grocery bills, clothing bills, maint bills and more.  All from around 1917-1921.  It was amazing to see all these things and learn a lot of the history of the house.

Through this blog I want to share all the experiences we have had with this beautiful house with everyone.  I hope that you can find it as exciting as we have and maybe learn a few things about this little place called Heart's Content, NL.

Come along our journey of restoring and finding treasures!
